What Luxury Interior Design Means to This Interior Designer

When I say “luxury interior design,” I know what you’re picturing. Something straight out of Bridgerton, complete with gilded mirrors and maybe a chandelier the size of a small car.

That’s not what I mean.

A room with all that can still feel incomplete. Another room can appear simple at first glance, but every material and detail feels exactly right.

So let’s talk about what luxury really looks like and how I incorporate it into my work as an interior designer.

What does quiet luxury actually look like at home?

Let’s first define quiet luxury in your home’s design: it’s a home where careful space planning, custom details, high-quality materials and timeless style come together in a way that feels refined but effortless.

It’s a quality you can feel, not something that needs to be announced.

Most importantly, quiet luxury is personal. It’s not about filling your home with marble, designer furniture and whatever finish is having its moment or chasing design trends simply because they’re popular. It’s about choosing the right materials, furnishings and details for the way you live, making sure they’re built well and beautifully designed and then thoughtfully bringing them together in your home.

Why does your home need to work well first?

A space can look amazing and be completely unlivable.

For example, a perfectly symmetrical, open-concept living room with high ceilings might have two couches facing each other across a massive rug. It looks amazing. However, those sofas are placed too far apart. To have a casual conversation, your guests are practically yelling across the room. There are no side tables to place a drink, and you have to awkwardly lean forward to reach a central, but still distant, coffee table.

It looks luxurious. It doesn’t feel luxurious.

At Elle Cherie Design, we believe that luxury is livable. That means that it has to look great, but it also has to make sense. This isn’t a museum or an art gallery. This is your home.

The way you move through it, gather with friends, or even settle in at the end of the day matters just as much as how it looks.

Which materials make luxury feel warm?

Bringing warmth into a space comes down to three decisions: fabrics, natural materials and space planning.

Luxurious spaces can feel cold and impersonal when aesthetics are prioritized over physical comfort. Visually, that can happen when too many polished surfaces, such as marble, chrome or glass, bounce light around the room without anything to soften them.

That’s why I like to layer in beautiful fabrics such as cashmere and wool. They add visual depth, softness and a sense of comfort that you notice the moment you enter the room.

Natural materials do something similar. Wood can soften metal, stone and glass, making a space feel lived-in and inviting, particularly when we choose species and finishes with warm golden or honey tones.

Then there’s how the room itself is arranged.

In a large room, pushing all the furniture against the walls can create an empty expanse in the middle that feels cavernous rather than luxurious. Instead, we can create more intimate furniture groupings and introduce layers at different heights to make even a generous space feel warm and inviting.

Where do custom high-end details make the greatest difference in interior design?

Custom high-end details make the greatest difference in three places: what you touch, what you want to see, and what you don’t want to see.

Your daily touchpoints include cabinet hardware, plumbing fixtures or even the satisfying “thud” of a solid-core door when you close it. They are small experiences, but you interact with them constantly. Quality becomes something you physically feel.

Then there are the details you want to notice.

When you enter a room, where does your eye go first? It might be a statement light fixture, a beautiful dining table or a piece of custom millwork. Those focal points are where investing in a piece designed specifically for your space can have an outsized impact.

And finally, there are the details you don’t want to notice.

Concealed lighting, recessed or hidden LED channels, integrated storage and grain-matched cabinetry remove visual interruptions. You may not be able to put your finger on why the room feels right, and that’s actually the point.
